Why Volunteering with Hedgehogs Might Be Your Best Team Day Yet

19 Jun 2025

Looking for a corporate volunteering opportunity that inspires connection, boosts morale, and supports a vital cause? You might not expect the answer to involve hedgehogs — but Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary is changing that.

At IDS Media UK, we believe that great work starts with great teams. That’s why we’re proud to support a charity that not only rescues hedgehogs, but revitalises people, too.

Team-Building, the Wild Way

When the team from TUI visited Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary for a volunteering day, they left with more than just muddy boots and heart-warming stories. They experienced first-hand how teamwork, shared purpose, and a connection to nature can lift spirits and strengthen bonds.

Whether it’s planting trees, cleaning out wildlife pods, or helping with hedgehog care, the sanctuary offers businesses a unique chance to give back while building a stronger, more connected workforce.

Why It Works

Studies show that volunteering improves employee wellbeing, job satisfaction, and team cohesion. Add in a sense of purpose and a few spiky (but adorable) creatures, and you’ve got a memorable team experience that also creates tangible impact.

The sanctuary, which relies on over 70 volunteers, welcomes group days and corporate partnerships to keep its work going. And with only one full-time employee, every helping hand counts.

IDS and the Hedgehogs

IDS Media UK supports Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary because their work aligns with our values: improving wellbeing, fostering community, and protecting the environment. When our teams do good, they feel good. It’s that simple.

We encourage our clients, partners, and peers to consider volunteering as more than just a day out — it’s a meaningful way to energise your team and support a cause that’s making a difference.

Edward Pickering Edward set up IDS Media in the UK over 30 years ago. In his previous life, our OG trained as a medical lab scientist, specialising in haematology and his fascination in the science behind health and wellness has stood the test of time. It makes sense then that his curiosity in the ‘ingredients’ of humankind has also manifested into a love of gastronomy. We are what we eat after all.
